Luis Alberto Meléndez
How old will you be as of August 22, 2016?
15 years old
City and province:
Coquitlam (Metro Vancouver), British Columbia
What action will you take to promote French in your school or community?
Next year, I would love to participate in my school’s student council to not only represent my grade, but to continue to be an ambassador for French within my schools community. I will do my best to apply our bilingual culture to all aspects of the schools functions. Whether it be with bilingual signs or bilingual festivals, I plan on promoting the French language and our bilingual culture as best I can within my schools community.
My dream is to create a society in British Columbia, as well as the rest of western Canada that is really inclusive of the French language and more aware and proud of how this beautiful language is incorporated into our national identity. Especially in a province with unfortunately very little English-French bilingualism, it’s somewhere were I can create the most change.
How do you practice your French daily?
I practice my French daily at school in my regular classes with my class mates and my teachers. Occasionally, I visit my friends and relatives who live in Montreal and I take the opportunity to expand my French communication abilities with them. Finally, when I am sent to my training courses over the summer with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, I take the opportunity to practice my French with other cadets and military personnel who speak French.
In one sentence, tell us why you can’t wait to take part in the 2016 NAYF:
I am honoured to participate and continue my learning of our national identity, which, I am very proud to have; to later bring back here to British Columbia and apply it to my community.
