PRESS RELEASE

96 young authors will receive scholarships!

OTTAWA, March 10 2021 – French for the Future is happy today to unveil the results of its 2020 National Essay Contest. In total, 387 teenagers in grades 10 to 12 from across Canada submitted solid poignant essays to try and win themselves a scholarship. With the quality of their writing, selecting the best texts was difficult, but the judges have picked and 96 writers have been declared the winners of the 2020 Contest. Congratulations to all!

French for the Future would like to congratulate all of the 2020 National Essay Contest participants. These youth worked hard to write thought-provoking texts on the subject of fake news their talent deserves recognition. The question asked to them was the following:

"How has fake news changed your relationship with the media?"

With this questions, French for the Future sought to challenge teenagers and give them an opportunity to express themselves with regards to the disinformation that can be found everywhere we read the news. Many of them spoke in their texts about the importance of critical thinking and offered concrete steps we can take to halt the spread of rumours and lies. We can have good faith that their generation will be wiser and better informed.

The list of the winners of the 2020 Contest from all provinces and territories is available on our website. This year, a total of 96 youth will be sharing a 348 000 $ scholarship envelope graciously offered by French for the Future's 14 partner colleges and universities. The theme for the 2020 Contest was developed with the help of MediaSmarts and their media litteracy expertise.
