French for the Future announces the launch of the 21st edition of its National Essay Contest, inviting students in grades 10 to 12 (Secondary IV to CEGEP in Quebec) across Canada to reflect on the question: “How to turn failure into success?” Francophone and Francophile youth have until December 18, 2026, to submit a 750-word essay in French for a chance to win one of 108 postsecondary scholarships offered by 16 partnering institutions, totalling $436,000.
“How to turn failure into success?”
A failed exam, a missed opportunity, a project that doesn't work out: failure takes many forms and is part of everyday life. Yet, behind every setback, there are valuable lessons, new perspectives, or unexpected opportunities. This is the reflection that the National Essay Contest invites young people to explore this year.
Participants are free to approach the theme from any angle they choose. The goal is to encourage them to develop their critical thinking skills, defend their ideas, and express their perspectives in French, whether it is their first or second language.
Beyond the writing exercise, the contest offers young people a concrete opportunity to prepare for the next stage of their education. Thanks to the support of 16 partnering postsecondary institutions, 108 scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $28,000 and totalling $436,000, will be awarded in the “French as a First Language” and “French as a Second Language” categories.
These scholarships provide access to a variety of academic programs offered partially or entirely in French in several regions across the country.

This 21st edition also welcomes a new partner, the University of Toronto, which joins the National Essay Contest by offering 8 scholarships, including 4 in the “French as a First Language” category and 4 in the “French as a Second Language” category. Of these scholarships, 4 are valued at $4,000 and 4 at $8,000, representing a total contribution of $48,000. This new partnership expands opportunities for young people wishing to pursue postsecondary education while continuing to make French part of their academic journey.
By participating, students can discover postsecondary institutions and educational opportunities they may not have previously considered, while recognizing the role French can play in their academic and professional futures.
According to data published by Statistics Canada in September 2026, French-language education is closely linked to bilingualism in Canada. In 2021, outside Quebec, 61% of people who had attended a French-language school or a French immersion program were bilingual, compared to only 4% of those who had never received schooling in French.
These figures highlight the importance of creating more opportunities for young people to learn, practise, and appreciate French. By encouraging written expression and facilitating access to postsecondary education in French, the National Essay Contest contributes to this goal.

According to Geneviève Gobeil, Interim Executive Director of French for the Future, “The National Essay Contest reminds young people that their voices and ideas matter, regardless of their level of proficiency in French. This year's theme also invites us to look at failure from a different perspective, not as an ending, but as an opportunity to learn and move forward. We hope this edition will encourage even more young people to gain confidence in their abilities and consider pursuing their studies in French.”
The contest is open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12 (Secondary IV to CEGEP in Quebec) across Canada, whether French is their first or second language. To participate, students simply need to write an original 750-word essay addressing this year's theme and submit it by December 18, 2026.
Young people interested in taking on the challenge can review the contest rules, explore the available scholarships, and submit their essays on the French for the Future website.
